Frequently Asked
Questions

ARE CLASSES HELD DURING HOLIDAYS?

DYS follows the student holiday schedule of school districts. If the public school hosting your Self-Defense, Karate, Dance, or Cheer class is closed during a particular holiday or due to inclement weather, DYS will not have classes on that day as well.

WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR ON THE FIRST DAY?

Your child can wear sweats, T-shirts, or any school-appropriate loose-fitting activewear.

WHEN ARE CLASS SEMESTERS OFFERED?

Full Class semesters are held during the Fall and Spring, and we also have a mini-semester during the first part of June. Classes usually run in conjunction with the applicable school district calendar.

HOW LONG ARE THE CLASSES?

Classes are 45 minutes of instruction with 15 minutes for registration.

ARE UNIFORMS REQUIRED?

Karate Smart students must purchase a GI (karate uniform). A uniform is not mandatory for Dance or Cheer classes unless your child is participating in a public event.

WHAT TYPES OF PAYMENT IS ACCEPTED AND WHEN?

Parents can pay online using the cash app $dysteamafterschool or pay cash or check in person (when using the cash app, please indicate your child's name) (no credit cards, please). If your child is participating in a class that is paid for by check,  we ask that you make your payment for at least three weeks.  When signing your child in , you may write "paid in advance" or "pre-paid". If pre- paying for multiple classes by cash, we ask that you bring your money in an envelope marked with the amount paid and your child's name on it.

HOW LONG IS PROGRAM?

Fall and Spring semesters are approximately 12-14 weeks long. If you do not register on the first day, your semester length will naturally be shorter. Registration is open throughout the school year. If Dance, Cheer, or Self-Defense students register late, the Registration Fee will be collected on the child's first day of classes each semester.

WHAT ARE SOME OTHER ASSOCIATED EXPENSES?

If your child wants to perform at an event such as a Parade or Spurs Game, they must attend Clinics to learn the routine. The routines taught at the clinics are different from those taught during regular classes during the week. Students must attend 3 out of 5 clinics to be able to perform at the Spurs Game.
