Frequently Asked
Questions
ARE CLASSES HELD DURING HOLIDAYS?
DYS follows the student holiday schedule for NISD, SISD, & SWISD school districts. If the public school hosting your Self-Defense, Karate, Dance or Cheer class is closed during a particular holiday, or if the school is closed due to inclement weather, DYS will not have classes on that day as well.
WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR ON THE FIRST DAY?
Please bring your child in sweats, T-shirts or any loose fitting active wear that is school appropriate.
WHEN ARE CLASS SEMESTERS OFFERED?
Full Class semesters are held during the Fall and Spring, and we also have a mini-semester during the first part of June. Classes normally run in conjunction with the applicable school district calendar.
HOW LONG ARE THE CLASSES?
Classes are 45 minutes of instruction with 15 minutes for registration.
ARE UNIFORMS REQUIRED?
Karate Smart students are required to wear a GI (karate uniform) to every class and performance. Uniforms are not mandatory for Self-Defense Kidnap Prevention class, Dance class, or Cheer class unless your child is participating in a public event.
WHAT TYPES OF PAYMENT ARE ACCEPTED AND WHEN?
Parents can pay online with your credit card, or instructors can accept cash or check in person (no credit cards in person please). If you are participating in a class that is charged "per class" and are paying by check, we ask that you make your payment for at least 3 weeks of classes. For example, if the class is $10.00 per class and you are paying by check, please make the check out for $30.00 (3 weeks of classes). When you sign your child in and you have paid in advance, you may write "paid in advance" or "pre-paid". If pre-paying for multiple classes by cash, we ask that you bring your money in an envelope marked with the amount paid and your child's name.
HOW LONG IS EACH SEMESTER/PROGRAM?
Fall and Spring semesters are approximately 12-14 weeks long. Class dates and fliers are available on the "Class Schedules and Clinics" page (link located above). If you do not register on the first day, your semester length will naturally be shorter. Late registration is permissible and welcome, but reduced payment adjustments for Karate Smart students is not applicable. If Dance, Cheer, or Self-Defense students choose to register late, the $30 Registration Fee will be collected on the child's first day of classes.
WHAT ARE ALL ASSOCIATED COSTS SO THERE ARE NO UNFORESEEN EXPENSES?
Uniforms are required if your child chooses to participate in Parades, Missions, or Spurs Games. If they are not performing in any such events, uniforms are not required (unless he/she is a Karate Smart student). The fliers you receive from your school will have the cost of each particular class. If your child wants to perform at an event such as a Parade and/or Spurs Game, they must attend Clinics to learn the routine. The routines taught at Clinic are different routines from those taught during normal classes during the week. Clinics are held on Saturday mornings and are $10.00 each (no registration fee). Students must attend 3 out of 5 clinics in order to be able to perform at the Spurs Game.
Some Performances may require a weapon (karate) or pom-pom (dance/cheer), but not all. Dance and Cheer students who participate in Parade Events will need a set of pom-poms and can purchase them for $20 the during the first month of classes. Karate students can borrow a set of nun-chucks from Mr. Henderson for Parade Events. On occasion, other events require use of another martial arts weapon (such as a sword) for the performance, but Mr. Henderson will make this known at the start of the semester. He aims to provide weapons for students to borrow during classes and performances, but at times it may be necessary to purchase a weapon for your student. All weapons are available for purchase through Mr. Henderson. Please speak with him if you are interested in purchasing a weapon before you buy one online. He will be able to direct you to the specific type of martial arts weapon used in classes/performances. This will help to avoid purchasing an incorrect weapon and wasting money.
HOW MANY SAN ANTONIO SPURS GAME PERFORMANCES WILL CHILDREN BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN, AND WILL EACH CHILD ENROLLED BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE?
Spurs Games performances occur once at the end of Spring (March/April) and once at the end of Fall (beginning of December). Only children with a uniform AND those that have attended 3 out of 5 Clinics on Saturday mornings (Clinics are $10 ea.) can perform at the games. A list of Clinic Dates can be found under "Class Schedules and Clinics" page located above. Performance opportunities are open to all students.
WHAT EXPERIENCE/SKILLS ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE AND WHAT SKILLS WILL THE CHILDREN GAIN FROM THE PROGRAM OR TYPE OF ACTIVITIES THEY WILL PERFORM?
There is no experience or requirements to participate. Students will learn basic Dance and Cheer movements and routines in the Dance/Cheer classes. Self-Defense Kidnap Prevention students will learn releases and techniques to get away from someone who might try to kidnap them, they will learn basic/critical information for contacting their parents (ex: learn parent's phone number, etc.), and be able to identify safe individuals who can assist them. Karate Smart Martial Arts students will learn basic Martial Arts/Karate/Tae Kwon Do skills.
